How Can I Save Money on Roof Replacement?

It amazes me how much money we spend on things that we don't need and fail to plan for large expenses. I recently updated the costs of asphalt shingles, and they continue to go up since everything else is also increasing.

The roof in your house has a limited lifespan, if you don't take care of it, and will require replacement.

Your roof mission

Your mission, should you wish you accept it, is to extend your roof's life as much as possible.

How? Well, the answer is quite simple. You actually already know how.

You do it for the HVAC system of your house and for your car. It's called preventative maintenance.

Here is more info, courtesy of The Roofing Channel, in this video at the 4:35 stamp "... maximize your lifespan by getting annual or semi-annual maintenance...find problems before they cause major issues."

We find the little problems before they become big expensive problems.

Here at Smooth Skies Services, we find the LITTLE problems before they become BIG problems.

Save Money, on Roof Replacement, with Preventive Maintenance-Revisited

How Can I Save Money on Roof Replacement?

We are creatures of habit, but until the habit evolves, what we do regularly usually occurs by choice and sometimes by a mandated choice.

Most of us are wired by the old proverb by Bert Lance “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

The problem with this statement is that if we wait until it is broken it WILL cost us more money to fix it. In addition, the stress, time, and emotional toll will be significantly higher depending on what is broken.

A good roof can last decades, but no roof will last forever. Your roof is constantly aging. If it is sagging, dropping, or leaking, it may be time to call for help.

But, by this time, the problem has already become BIG. What to do?

Nearly all roofs will need to be replaced eventually and it’s a costly project. The cost of a new roof can range from $8,500 to $14,300, depending on the material, labor cost, and where you are located.

Per the United States Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, the average cost of a new roof is $10,000, including materials and labor. The range is as wide as $8,500-$14,300.

A larger roof means more materials and more work, so it makes sense that replacing a roof on a large home costs more. About 80% of roof replacement jobs with basic asphalt shingles cost $4.50–$6 per square foot. For a home between 1000-3000 square feet, roof replacement may cost between $4500 to $18,000.

And I am only talking about installing the new roof covering.

We still need to talk about the old roof removal. This will vary between $1-$5 per square foot.

If there is any need for underlayment repair, then we need to add more cost.

If your roof has additional features like chimneys, skylights, and others that create potential weak points for leaks and require special materials, it will add more cost.

Roof repairs are TEMPORARY fixes.

We live in a time when the cost of living is increasing. Roofing materials and labor have also been impacted by this.

The more recent pricing can be found here.

This means the materials are at least 30% more expensive. You need to add labor and fuel to the final price of the roof materials price.

I think you get the picture.

You protect your car and home HVAC unit annually with annual checks. You should do the same for your roof.

PROACTIVE maintenance is better than REACTIVE maintenance.

Don’t you want to:

  • Know the current condition of your roof?

  • Be able to extend the life of your roof?

  • Be prepared when it's time to replace your roof.

  • Save money on unexpected repairs?

  • Have peace of mind knowing experts are monitoring your roof?

Of course, we all want to. But, this requires a choice to create a new habit.
